Red Velvet Cake Waffle

Makes 4–5 waffles

A decadent twist on a classic, this Red Velvet Cake Waffle brings the rich flavour and soft crumb of red velvet cake into perfectly cooked waffle form. Prepared in the Cuisinart Vertical Waffle Maker, the batter cooks evenly to create a lightly crisp exterior with a tender, cake-like centre.

Finished with a smooth cream cheese glaze, this recipe is ideal for special occasion brunches or an indulgent dessert. Serve warm on its own or with a scoop of ice cream for an extra touch of luxury.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups plain flour
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp red food colouring (adjust for desired hue)
  • 110g cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup icing sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk (more as needed)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Set the Cuisinart Vertical Waffle Maker to to the desired browning level (medium-dark gives the best “cake crust”).
  2. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, sugar, melted butter, vanilla, vinegar, and red food colouring until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined - don’t overmix. Let the batter rest 3–5 minutes while the waffle maker heats to temperature.
  5. Lightly grease the plates with cooking spray or butter. Pour about ½ cup of batter into the fill spout. Cook until the green light illuminates indicating the cake waffle is ready to eat.
  6. To make the glaze, beat together cream cheese, butter, and icing sugar until smooth. Add milk and vanilla; whisk until pourable.
  7. Serve & enjoy – add ice cream for an indulgent twist!
